2nd Grade Green Screens

This year in 2nd graders learned letter writing in class. They then wrote a letter to their third grade teacher giving information about themselves. Students then practiced reading their writing and created a video to share.

We then learned about Green Screen technology and used Green Screens to record students reading their letters. Students learned how to use the camera to record each other. Then they learned how to find an image and save a photo to the iPad. We then used Green Screen by Do Ink to create their own video with a background that matched their text. Students did ALL of the filming themselves, chose an online image and then used the app Green Screen by Do Ink to share their learning. Enjoy our projects! 2nd Grade Adventures

This year in 2nd grade, we learned research skills while studying different landmarks around the U.S.A. After researching many different places throughout the year, students picked one place and wrote about it.

We then used Green Screen Technology to "visit" the locations and report "live on location."  Students did all of the filming themselves, chose an online image and then used the app Green Screen by Do Ink to create their own on location video.

2nd Grade Tech Projects

This year, 2nd grade teachers tried a couple of new apps to share student learning.

Ms. Olson had her class write about what they were proud of this year. The students came to the library and took their own photos of their work and then used FOTOBABBLE to create sharable presentations. If you are looking for the app for your iPad, it is technically an iPhone app--so you need to search accordingly. It took me a while to find it, so hopefully that saves some time.

Here is a link to her projects. It takes a few minutes to load up, but they are so cute--so let them load up!

Mrs. Anderson's class went outside and took notes about an object found in nature. Then they wrote haikus about the objects. I then taught students how to take photos using the iPad. We then went outsid and took photos of our object in nature.  Next, we logged on to Haiku Deck, uploaded the picture, typed poems and then published them.  We had some minor technical difficulties-- but students were patient and we got it done. Click here to see 2A Haiku Deck Projects. They are beautiful!

These were fun projects. It is so much fun to collaborate with these classrooms.

2nd Grade Weather Reports

Modeling Note taking
In second grade we have been practicing our research skills all year. We are really good at it. These past few weeks the 2nd grade teachers and I collaborated to make one of our big projects of the year. WEATHER RESEARCH which goes with their science outcomes.

We started by having the students by having students come up with questions they wanted to learn ablout extreme weather. Then students practiced note taking with their classroom teachers about Droughts using PEBBLE GO.

Taking Notes
Students were then broken into groups to research different extreme weather. Classes came to the library and took notes in small groups about different extreme weather using the skills they have been practicing this year.
Using Pebble Go

Next students came to the library and I modeled note taking skills using nonfiction books. I modeled using the topic droughts, and students researched their own topics. After they had notes, students wrote paragraphs about their topics. Students have been learning a lot about writing paragraphs in class. Students then created a news report about their weather.

In library we turned their reports into news LIVE NEWS programs. Check them out. They are AMAZING! (each class will be posted as they complete the project).

2nd Grade Research

2nd Graders are awesome at research. Students used all of their research skills they have learned this year to research animals from around the world.

We have practiced summarizing, using captions, online sources and books. Students then used the computer to draw their animal.

Students started by thinking about what they wanted to learn about animals, then they used Pebble Go to research and books. After their research was complete, classroom teachers worked with students to summarize and write paragraphs. They have more information hanging up near their rooms. Students picked one of their paragraphs to type and publish online.

I used a variety of presentation tools to publish (I am trying to learn some new skills). Click on class name to link to completed project.

2nd Grade Research

My 2nd Graders are awesome at research. We have been been reading nonfiction, taking notes, and writing reports all year. Their teachers are so great at collaborating with me, and it shows in the skills these kiddos have. Teaching with these lovely ladies is easy and fun--and our students learn so much! As I look at these completed new projects I am astonished at the growth we see in one year.

Recently, all second grade classes researched a different country from around the world. I helped them get started on the research part--then teachers continued in their classrooms. Students then worked with their teachers to learn skills about writing a paragraph to report their information. I taught them how to create illustrations in Little Bird Tales (which is one of my favorite multi-media creation tools for the primary grades--Go create a free account and play if you haven't yet!) I then worked with teachers to combine student work into books that have an illustration, a topic sentence, and a recording of students reading the paragraphs they wrote. They turned out great.

Check out our class pages with links to our books (I will link up to the last classes as they complete their books):

2nd Grade eBooks

I have been working with our 2nd graders on research skills all year, and they are getting really good at finding the most important information as they read non fiction.

Right now, students are learning about different countries around the world. Students are going to culminate their research by writing an eBook using Little Bird Tales.

To practice each class is using this great free online resource to create a book about their class. Here is Ms. Anderson's class. Look for our Country Research soon!
