3rd Grade Podcast Project: Bringing History to Life

Our 3rd grade students recently wrapped up an exciting research and podcasting project that combined history, technology, and creativity!

In the classroom, students began by exploring influential people who have changed history. Each class practiced research skills together before students chose a historical figure they were especially interested in learning more about.

In the library, we shifted our focus to podcasts. What they are and what makes them fun and engaging to listen to. Students spent a week listening to a variety of podcasts and brainstorming what stood out to them as listeners.

The following week, students learned about the structure of a strong podcast. They discovered that most podcasts include:

  • A catchy introduction
  • The host’s name
  • The name of the podcast
  • A preview of the episode topic
  • Clear and interesting information about the topic
  • A thoughtful conclusion
  • A thank you to the audience
  • An invitation to listen again next time

With this knowledge, students wrote and recorded their own podcasts about their chosen historical figures. Using the Podbean app, they even added music to make their episodes sound polished and professional.

We are so proud of their hard work and creativity—take a moment to listen and check out their amazing work!

    • Give the host's same
    • Give the name of the podcast
    • What we are going to talk about today
  • Information about topic
    • Give information about your topic

We also learned that podcasts have names that fit the topic and make people want to listen. Each class brainstormed names and then voted for their favorites. I am very excited for you all to listen to: Solve the Mystery of History (3 Ostendorff) Biography Busters (3 Bros) and Mr. Hessler's Podcast Team (3 Hessler)

Before recording, students learned that podcasters need to pay attention to the rate of their voices, their expression and volume. They then practiced reading their scripts. Lastly, students came to the library to record their podcast using the SPOTIFY FOR PODCASTERS APP. They recorded themselves and chose music to make the podcast more enjoyable. Podcasts With 3rd Grade

In 3rd grade students researched people that changed history. Our research process focused more on using a new type of resource (the online encyclopedia) as in second grade students had a lot of experience using books, ebooks, and databases (PebbleGo).

I first taught students what an encyclopedia was, and we did an encyclopedia scavenger hunt. Then students learned how to use the online Encyclopedia Britanica. Students practiced using the online encyclopedia with me to research Nelson Mandela. They also practiced looking up other history makers in the classroom.

The students then got to choose a history maker to research. In library they used the computers to research using the online encyclopedia.

For their final product, students wrote paragraphs about their famous person which they turned into podcasts made in Clips.  Students listened to podcasts and learned the communication skills needed to project their voice and to teach people about their topics.  Classes brainstormed what makes a good podcast and tried to incorporate an introduction and conclusion into their podcast research. Classes made titles to fit their class podcast. We had a lot of fun and learned a lot!

Catalog Practice

In 3rd Grade we have been learning how to use the catalog to help us locate books. Last week, I taught students how to do a TITLE search. They then practiced with a partner. We also reviewed how to see if books were checked in or out-- and what the CALL # was so that they could be found by students independently.

This week, I taught students how the difference between a SUBECT search and a KEYWORD search. Students then completed a scavenger hunt using the catalog. It is great to see our students becoming more independent library users!

3rd Grade Research

In 3rd grade this year our research topic changed to reflect new standards in our district. This year students researched people that changed history. Our research process focused more on using a new type of resource (the online encyclopedia) as in second grade students had a lot of experience using books, ebooks, and databases (PebbleGo).

Classes then wrote paragraphs. I combined them into an eBook.

3rd Grade Research

Our 3rd grade students have been working on their research skills. Students worked with small groups to do research on different Southwest and Great Basin Native American groups of the United States. Students used books to research the group they were studying.

Each student was responsible to research one or more aspects of their Native American group and then write a paragraph(s) and illustrate a page for their group eBook. We had a lesson on evaluating images and stereotypes before students created their images.

It is so much fun to see how much students grow in their note taking abilities over the years.

Please check out our eBooks. We made them in Flipsnack EDU. Click on the group to see the eBook.

3rd Grade Research

In 3rd Grade I recently worked with students to do research on Native American groups from the South Western United States.

Students summarized their notes and learned about evaluating images to choose appropriate images to draw for their eBooks. Students created images on the computer. We then worked as groups to upload our paragraphs and drawings to Flipsnack EDU a wonderful FREE tool to create eBooks.

3rd Grade Research and eBooks

Students evaluating images and sketching
before using the computers
Our 3rd Graders have been studying Native American Cultures of the Southwest. This year, I collaborated with 3rd grade teachers to teach research skills and note taking. After students had completed their research, they were ready to start creating their multimedia project. We used drawing programs on the computer or the iPads to create images to go with the paragraphs that students wrote.

After looking at state standards, the teachers and I decided that for this project we would teach the students about evaluating images in the nonfiction texts they were reading to decide what to draw for their eBooks. After a mini-lesson on image evaluation, students used the research texts to find images that were appropriate for their eBooks. Students worked diligently to try to accurately represent the culture they were learning about.

After students had written their paragraphs and drawn their pictures I taught them how to move their documents into Flipsnack.
